The great Twitter divide

These statistics, combined with Twitter’s recent announcement showing huge growth in the number of Tweets posted suggest that the world is becoming split between two groups of people: those who are extremely active on Twitter and those who aren’t active at all.

Amplifyd from money.cnn.com
a whopping 73% of Twitter accounts have tweeted fewer than 10 times according to a new report from Barracuda Networks
It seems that Twitter is becoming more of news feed than a social network, said Paul Judge, author of the report and chief research officer at Barracuda.Read more at money.cnn.com

Trust on the social web is declining

Though I think it makes perfect sense that their is an inverse relationship between the size of your social network and the trust you have in it, I’m a bit surprised and disappointed by these findings.

Amplifyd from bbh-labs.com
So we were more than a little taken aback by the findings of the latest Edelman Trust Barometer that shows we trust our friends and peers as a source of information considerably less than we did two years ago. The decline is particularly marked in the US where just 25% of respondents view friends and peers as very/extremely credible-a decline of 20 percentage points on 2008
It is perhaps inevitable that the bigger our networks get, the less absolute trust we have in the individuals within themRead more at bbh-labs.com

The link between foursquare and getting robbed

I suppose this is pretty obvious, but thought it was worth Amplifying anyway. As i’ve said before, i don’t have any desire to broadcast my location… mostly because i can’t see why you would care where i am. But for those of you who enjoy it, please check out this article and make sure you’re using foursquare in a way that maintains your safety.

The ideal tool for robbery has apparently become Foursquare
The new website PleaseRobMe.com is designed to illustrate the criminal potential of Foursquare. It shows Foursquare users tweeting the fact that they are no longer at home, and thus that their valuables are potentially vulnerable to thieves.Read more at valleywag.gawker.com

Is Twitter an information company? (via @georgedearing)

A very interesting question. I think the answer is yes, but on one condition. Change the last word of this clip from "profits" to "relevancy". If they can do that, then i say watch out. Otherwise, I think Twitter will remain a popular service for a relatively small percentage of the population (still an enormous amount of people, but not ubiquitous like Googl... read more

The billions of tweets that Twitter is gathering up could certainly be the basis for a vast, searchable archive. The challenge facing Mr Stone and his colleagues is to find smart ways of transforming those raw data into profits.”Read more at www.wowfeed.com

Is Facebook Connect the new driver’s license?

I think of Facebook Connect (and potentially Twitter Connect too), as being analogous to a driver's license, social security card or club membership card. Much like in our offline lives we depend upon these things in order to identify ourselves and get in to places, FB Connect is filling that same role online. In my opinion, regardless of whether people tire of... read more

“I think Facebook is the most valuable Internet commodity in existence, more so than Google, because they are positioning themselves to be our online identity via Facebook connect,” Ravasio said.

“It’s your real name, it’s your real friends, and assuming they manage to navigate the privacy quagmire, they’re poised to become your universal login,”

Guess what percentage of Twitter users who Tweeted last month

I would have thought it was higher than this. I fully appreciate (and experience) the reality that a great percentage of registered users don't actually "use" a service, but i would have thought Twitter was more in the 30-35% range. For all the incredible free promotion Twitter has gotten, it has to be a source of concern for them that so many millions of peopl... read more

According to the findings, only 17% of all Twitter accounts Twittered last month. That’s down from more than 70% in early 2007 when Twitter was a fledgling company with far, far fewer users.Read more at www.computerworld.com

Dying for social media (literally) via @shonali @kamichat

Every so often you come across a line like this that just stops you in your tracks...it's not that we don't realize how completely messed up things are in some parts of the world, but to really digest the impact of this reality is so disturbing and hard to comprehend. Here we are on sites like Amplify and Twitter speaking our minds, being heard, learning and con... read more

What keeps more people from liking Twitter? via @scobleizer

While I think Robert makes some smart points in this blog post about how Twitter could further improve the way they recommend users, I don't think he's right in identifying the main reason why new users aren't figuring out anything useful to do on Twitter. Robert suggests that "They aren't being shown enough other members with interests that match their own!" P... read more

Twitter’s growth has slowed and I believe a major reason is because new users aren’t figuring out anything useful to do with Twitter. They aren’t being shown enough other members with interests that match their own!

I’ve talked with normal people about why that is. Over and over they tell me that they can’t find anything interesting to watch on Twitter.

Did Amplify kill the Tonight Show?

Ok, of course Amplify didn't kill the Tonight Show...but we've always talked internally about wanting Amplify to provide a sort of global, real-time, always open water cooler where people could share and discuss the interesting news of the day. So when i read this clip comparing the Tonight Show to a water cooler, a light bulb went off in my head. So maybe Ampl... read more

“The Tonight Show” has always been a kind of a water cooler where we all showed up and waited for the funniest person in the room to say something hilarious.
But as things stand now, by the end of the day, we all have been bombarded by news and commentary from all manner of media, making “The Tonight Show” and its ilk increasingly seem beside the point, no matter who is delivering the monologue. Read more at www.nytimes.com

Comparing social media to Paul Revere (and thinking about Amplify’s role)

I clipped this from a smart piece in which @benparr discusses the global impact of social media (most specifically, Twitter). It goes without saying that Twitter has had an enormous, positive impact on our ability to become aware of and rally around global issues. But as I read this, I quickly found myself thinking about how Amplify fits in and further contrib... read more

Just as Paul Revere embarked on his midnight ride to warn that the British were coming, social media acts as both the first warning and the rallying cry for mobilization. In the end though, social media is just a collection of tools. It’s up to us, the people, to make the real impact on our world.
